The Richard Cardinal Cushing Award
St. Mary’s High School has established The Richard Cardinal Cushing Society
to underscore the significance of Catholic education and to honor its
staunchest proponents.
Then-Archbishop Cushing came to Lynn to dedicate the newly-build St. Mary’s
Church in 1947. The original Church had been built in 1862, but was destroyed
by fire in 1941. The success of St. Mary’s grammar and high schools inspired
Cardinal Cushing to devote millions of dollars for new central high schools in
various parts of the archdiocese in the 1950s and 1960s.
The Cardinal Cushing Award honors this great leader and the legacy he left to
Catholic education in the Archdiocese of Boston.
This award is presented annually to one who is a vigorous champion of Catholic
education and whose personal and professional life mirror the mission of
St. Mary’s. Click here to see all past honorees.
The Richard Cardinal Cushing Society was established in 1999 to honor
St. Mary’s most generous supporters. Membership is offered to those who
make an annual leadership gift of $1,000 and above.
Cushing Society members are welcomed to the annual Cardinal Cushing Reception
which is highlighted by the presentation of the Richard Cardinal Cushing Award.
It is an opportunity to celebrate the gift of Catholic education, and thus the gift of
St. Mary’s High School. It is also a welcome occasion to recognize our major
supporters and their outstanding commitment to St. Mary’s.
